My younger brother, Josh, is 25, and he had been dating Trisha, 23, for years.
Trisha had practically become an official member of our family. She was at every family gathering, weekend dinner, holiday celebration, and even family vacations. I had gotten so used to having her around that I had been calling her my “sister-in-law” for a long time, even though she and Josh had never actually gotten married.

I had never had a reason to distrust Trisha.
So when she called me one day, crying and saying that she and Josh had gotten into a huge fight, then asked if she could stay at my place for a few days, I didn’t hesitate.
“Of course. Come over,” I told her.
I thought she simply needed somewhere to cool down.
At first, everything seemed completely normal.
Trisha said she would only stay for the weekend. I didn’t mind. I tried to make her feel as comfortable as possible. I cooked extra food, gave her space, and didn’t ask too many questions about her fight with Josh.
But the weekend came and went.
Then several more days passed.
Trisha was still there.
What was strange was that she never actually said when she planned to leave.
Even stranger, Josh didn’t contact her at all.
He didn’t call me.
He didn’t text Trisha.
He didn’t ask where she was.
He didn’t ask when she was coming back.
I started to feel that something wasn’t right.
If this had only been an ordinary argument, Josh would have at least tried to talk to his girlfriend. But his silence continued day after day.
I considered calling him and asking what was going on, but then I decided it was probably something between the two of them. I didn’t want to interfere.
After more than a week, other strange things started happening.
One day, I couldn’t find my favorite perfume.
I searched everywhere—my bedroom, bathroom, and handbag—but it was nowhere.
Then I realized that some old family photographs were missing from a drawer.
They were pictures I had kept for years.
I started to panic.
But then I tried to reassure myself.
Work had been stressful lately. I had misplaced things before and completely forgotten where I put them. Maybe I had simply moved everything and forgotten.
I didn’t want to suspect Trisha.
She had been part of my family for so long.
But then I started noticing her behavior.
At night, I sometimes heard Trisha whispering in her room.
She wasn’t talking on the phone.
It was just quiet whispering, so soft that I couldn’t make out what she was saying.
One day, while cleaning, I found several small cloth bags hidden around my apartment.
One was under the couch.
Another was in the corner of the bedroom.
A third had been placed near the front door.
I picked one up and asked,
“Trisha, what is this?”
She looked at me and calmly replied,
“Herbal pouches. They help clear bad energy from the house.”
I didn’t know how to respond.
It sounded strange, but I also didn’t want to turn it into an argument.
“Oh… okay.”
I put the pouch down.
I tried to convince myself that it was simply one of Trisha’s unusual habits.
But deep down, I still felt uneasy.
Then everything happened yesterday.
I got home earlier than usual.

According to her normal schedule, Trisha should have still been at work at that time.
But as soon as I reached my door, I saw her shoes.
I stood there for several seconds.
Why was she home so early?
I opened the door.
The apartment was quiet.
I stepped inside and looked down at her shoes.
Something was stuck to one of them.
A small piece of paper.
I bent down and picked it up.
Then I turned it over.
My heart dropped.
It was a photograph of Josh.
But strange symbols had been scribbled all over the picture.
I had no idea what they meant.
I only knew that looking at them sent a chill down my spine.
I immediately rushed toward Trisha’s room.
The door was open.
I stepped inside.
And what I saw left me completely frozen.
Trisha was standing in my room.
She was wearing my lingerie.
Not her clothes.
Mine.
The set I had kept inside my drawer.
I stood there, unable to move.
Trisha didn’t panic.
She didn’t even look embarrassed.
She simply stared at me.
Her calmness was somehow even more frightening.
Then she whispered,
“I can explain.”
Something inside me snapped.
The cloth pouches.
The late-night whispering.
The photograph of Josh covered in strange symbols.
Trisha staying in my home for more than a week.
And now this.
I didn’t want to hear another word.
“Get out of my house.”
Trisha opened her mouth.
“But—”
“Get out.”
“I really can explain…”
“I don’t want to hear it.”
I just wanted her gone.
Immediately.
Eventually, Trisha packed her things and left my apartment.
After the door closed behind her, I stood alone in the living room for a long time.
I still couldn’t understand what had just happened.
I took out my phone and called Josh.
“Josh, you need to tell me what’s going on.”
“What happened?”

I told him everything.
About Trisha staying at my apartment for more than a week.
About her strange behavior.
About the photograph.
And finally, about finding her wearing my clothes.
There was a long silence on the other end.
Then Josh said,
“Wait… Trisha isn’t my girlfriend anymore.”
I froze.
“What?”
“We broke up.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Josh explained that the huge argument I had heard about was actually when the two of them decided to end their relationship.
“That’s why I didn’t call her,” Josh said. “I thought she would find somewhere else to stay.”
I sank into a chair.
Everything I thought I understood suddenly changed.
I had assumed Josh and Trisha were simply angry with each other.
But they had already broken up.
And if that was true…
What was Trisha doing in my apartment?
Why had she been hiding those cloth pouches?
Why did she have a photograph of Josh?
And why was she wearing my lingerie?
That night, I took the photograph out again.
The strange symbols still made me uncomfortable.
I didn’t know what they meant.
I couldn’t even be certain that Trisha was actually performing some kind of ritual, as I had initially suspected.
Maybe it was something completely different.
Then I remembered the perfume and the family photographs I had accused her of taking.
I opened the cabinet in my bedroom.
They were right there.
The perfume.
The photographs.
Everything.
I stood there in shock.
Trisha hadn’t taken them.
I had moved them myself and simply forgotten.
A wave of embarrassment washed over me.
I had suspected her of things she hadn’t done.
But that didn’t make what I had witnessed yesterday any less disturbing.
I still didn’t know what Trisha was thinking.
I still didn’t know what those pouches were actually for, or what the photograph of Josh meant.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized something.
Trisha had been part of our lives for years.
I had considered her a sister.
And even though what she had done frightened and disturbed me, a part of me still didn’t want to simply decide that she was a bad person.
Maybe she was going through something serious.
Maybe the breakup with Josh had caused her to spiral in a way none of us had noticed.
I still don’t know what I’m supposed to do.
I only know that after everything that happened, I can’t look at Trisha the same way anymore.
And perhaps the most frightening part isn’t that I discovered she was hiding a secret.
It’s that I still have no idea what that secret really is.
