A young woman was waiting for her flight at a busy international airport. Her departure had been delayed, which meant she had several hours to kill. So she stopped at one of the airport shops, bought a novel and a package of cookies, and found a comfortable seat near her gate.
The chair beside her was empty, with the package of cookies sitting between her and a man in the next seat who was quietly reading a magazine.
After a while, the woman reached over and took a cookie. To her surprise, the man reached into the package and took one too.
She immediately felt annoyed.
Seriously? Is this guy actually eating my cookies?
She decided not to say anything. The terminal was crowded, and she had no desire to start an argument in front of a hundred strangers. She went back to her book.
But it kept happening.
Every time she took a cookie, the man took one as well. The more he ate, the more irritated she became. Somehow, he remained completely calm, casually reading his magazine as though nothing unusual was happening.
Finally, there was only one cookie left.
The woman stared at it and thought, Well, this should be interesting. Let’s see what this incredibly rude guy does now.
The man glanced at the last cookie, picked it up, broke it neatly in half, and handed one half to her without saying a word.
That was the final straw.
Furious, she grabbed her things and walked away without even looking back.
Later, after boarding the plane and settling into her seat, she opened her purse to find her reading glasses.
Her hand suddenly froze.
There, inside her bag, was the unopened package of cookies she had bought earlier.
For several seconds, she simply stared at it.
Then the truth hit her.
The cookies at the airport had never been hers.
The man she had silently accused of being selfish and rude had actually been sharing his cookies with her the entire time. He hadn’t complained, argued, or shown even the slightest irritation. He had simply shared what he had — right down to the very last cookie.
A wave of embarrassment washed over her. She wished she could go back, apologize, and thank him for his kindness.
But by then, it was too late.
